Charles François Gounod
1818 - 1893

Charles François Gounod was a French composer. He studied music at the Paris Conservatory and in Rome. He also studied for the priesthood and worked as an organist, and he was torn between the theater and the church.

 

His reputation is largely based on his hugely popular opera Faust (1859). His 15 other operas include Romeo and Juliet (1867), The Mock Doctor (1858), Philemon and Baucis (1860) and Mireille (1864); further works include 17 masses, more than 150 songs and 2 symphonies.
